watched the whole cube-trilogy today. and to cite anal cunt, “it just gets worse”. cube itself is pure gold. a film that does everything right, for example it’s not even asking the questions (thus avoiding giving stupid answers). the film-poster probably says it all. also, very few gore and art direction that actually makes you think about art direction (like, “so that’s what they do when they do it right!”). and don’t get me started at the psychological components (an actual warning, i’ll be talking for half an hour straight next time someone asks me).

cube 2/hypercube tries. the end is at least as classy as shitty, but some not-so-compelling attempts at answering some questions lessen the excitement. then again, still some great subtle touches making it still a good movie. cube zero is were it’s getting ugly. characters loose depth but gain a substantial gimmicky quality. here’s a metaphor to use: some personas are that shallow, you can’t believe they’re three-dimensional.

what really hurt was the story regarding the bigger picture. the film is set as a prequel, opening the possibility to close some plot-holes. although there weren’t any real holesto begin with, just things you weren’t told. the result are lots of things that just don’t make sense and don’t add up. if you started to think about art direction in part one, you’ll be having a field trip with this too, but for “spot what’s wrong 101”-class. however, the finale STILL knows how to disappoint, tearing everything apart that made part 1 & 2 great, even ruining the only point in favor for part zero. then again, the definitive worst is the last scene. pure travesty, if there is one.

so, conclusion:part 1 gold, part 2 still a good watch, part zero not even funny. oh, almost forgot to mention: zero adds lots of gore and blood, in what seems to be a feeble attempt to replace the psychological brutality.
